We will force Nigeria to accept gay marriage- US

The United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield has noted that the US won’t stop pressurizing Nigeria to accept and legalize gay marriage. She spoke to journalists via a live Web interview from Washington. Quote below;
As a government, it is
one of the highest
priorities and
strongest values that
discrimination against
anyone based on their
sexual orientation and
gender identity is
wrong. We believe
human rights should
be available to
everybody. As a
policy, we will
continue to press the
government of
Nigeria, as well as
other governments
which have provided
legislation that
discriminate against
the LGBT community.
This is very much a
work in progress, but I
think you will agree
with me that the law
in Nigeria really went
far in discriminating
against this
community but also
people who associate
with them. So, we will
continue to press the
government, to press
the legislature to
change these laws
and provide human
rights for all Nigerian
people regardless of
their sexual
orientation. With what
is happening in the
US, you can determine
how far we are willing
to go. We strongly
believe human rights
for all people and we
are particularly
opposed to legislation
that actually targets
the gay community for
discrimination. So we
are prepared to push
this as a policy, not
just in Africa but
across the world.

Raheem Sterling: City and Liverpool agree £49m deal

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the £49m transfer of Raheem Sterling.
The transfer of the 20-year-old England
winger is subject to contract negotiations and a medical.
Sterling had asked to leave Anfield and was the subject of two bids from City in June, which were rejected.
The 20-year-old is under contract until 2017, but turned down a new £100,000-a-week deal at Liverpool.
On Saturday, Sterling was named on a 30-man list for the tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia, but was then withdrawn.
Several former Liverpool players have
criticised the player since he told manager Brendan Rodgers and chief executive Ian Ayre he wanted to leave the club this summer.
Former captain Steven Gerrard said he was "disappointed" in the England international.
"You don't have to throw in illness, or refuse to go on tour," LA Galaxy midfielder Gerrard added. "The fans have shown him great support, they want him to stay and I believe that he should too."
However, it is understood the Reds decided to leave him out of the tour after the player reported for duty.
A recent study ranked Sterling as the most valuable young player in Europe, ahead of Paris St-Germain defender Marquinhos and Manchester United's recently acquired Dutch striker Memphis Depay.

Casillas signs two-year contract with FC Porto

Porto have handed Iker Casillas a two-year contract with the option of a third following his transfer from Real Madrid.
Iker Casillas has rubber-stamped his move from Real Madrid to Porto by signing a two- year contract with the Primeira Liga giants. The legendary goalkeeper's transfer was confirmed on Saturday, signalling the end of a
25-year association with the Santiago
Bernabeu outfit.
Casillas held a news conference to bid an
emotional farewell to his boyhood club earlier on Sunday and struggled to hold back the tears as he delivered a pre-prepared statement. Porto subsequently confirmed details of Casillas' new contract, which includes the option of a third year.
Casillas departs Real having amassed 725 appearances since making his debut away to Athletic Bilbao in 1999, and is expected to be replaced in Rafael Benitez's side by Manchester United keeper David de Gea. The 34-year-old has won everything before him in a 15-year career on domestic and international fronts with Real and Spain, listing five La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions Leagues among two European Championships and a 2010 World Cup triumph. Apparently, united might lose De Gea.

Buhari cancels SSS promotion exercise carried out by Predecessor

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the State Security Service (SSS) to cancel the promotion exercise it conducted for its staff in the last days of the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, due to “observed lapses.”
The directive was Buhari’s first order reversing his predecessor’s action since he assumed office a month ago. The order targets promotions that were conducted “from 31 March to date.”
An SSS memo, signed by one, Toma C. and dated July 3, 2015, urged those that
benefitted from the exercise “to revert to their former ranks with immediate effect.”
A wide category of staff that were “promoted, converted and upgraded” by the exercise would be affected.
“In view of the observed lapses in the
promotion exercise released from 31st March, 2015 to date, the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has directed its suspension forthwith. The personnel affected include those promoted, converted and upgraded within the period under review,” the memo said.
“The DGSS has constituted a committee to handle the review of all the cases,” it said, urging its offices across the country to disseminate the information to all personnel. President Buhari also cancelled a recently concluded recruitment exercise into the SSS, it was learnt. Jonathan had approved last-minute appointments and promotions in various departments of government less than two months before leaving office, after he lost the 2015 presidential election to Buhari.
During the period, the SSS carried out a
promotion exercise where it elevated senior members of the service to the next rank, including its spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar. The exercise had reportedly drawn criticisms from other members of the service who felt they had been shut out. Last Thursday, Buhari removed the head of the SSS, Ita Ekpenyong, and appointed Lawal Musa Daura as its new director general.
Also, security sources informed Daily Trust on Sunday that the president had approved the redeployment of his Chief Security Officer(CSO), Abdulrahman Mani, from the Villa. He was replaced, by Bashir Abubakar, a former assistant director of operations of the SSS in Kebbi command.
A Presidency source has hinted Mani was
sacked for revoking the order by the Aide-De-Camp to the President, Lt.-Col. Lawal
Abubakar, removing operatives of the State Security Services from providing the close body protection to Buhari.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, simply said last night that the president felt embarrassed by the “counter-directive” issued by the CSO.
When contacted for comment on phone, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said he could not confirm the sack of the CSO as he was “not in town”.
Mani, had in a memo, dated June 26, had
asked the SSS personnel to ignore the ADC’s order, saying it was a misrepresentation of Buhari’s directive.
The ADC had earlier issued a memo
redeploying the DSS officials from 10 beats that they had previously taken charge within the State House and ordered military personnel and the Nigeria Police to take over the DSS officials’ duties of providing “close/immediate protection” for Buhari with immediate effect.
But the CSO had argued that the SSS
personnel’s roles in the State House were
backed by relevant statutes and gazetted
instruments. He had listed such roles as
including close body protection of the
president in line with standard operational procedures and international best practices. Mani was appointed CSO to the president in April, after he won the election.
The new CSO, sources said, was picked for the presidency job because of the neutrality he displayed during the 2015 elections, by
refusing to dance to the tune of his boss in Kebbi to aid the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the poll in the state.
He was said to have been severely
reprimanded for his action by the service and posted to its headquarters in Abuja as punishment.
Meanwhile, reporters on Sunday gathered that SSS staff across the country are happy with the appointment of Daura as the new DG because of his pedigree in the security outfit.
“The appointment of an insider has raised the morale of our personnel who believe that he is their own and is going to safeguard the professional character of our job and restore its past glories,” one of the officers who does not want to be named, said.

Suspect broke down in tears in court when Judge recognized him as a former classmate

Aww, how sad for him! A burglary suspect broke down in tears in court after the judge he was appearing in front of recognized him as a former schoolmate and said he had been the "best kid" in school.

"Oh my goodness!" replied Arthur Booth, then he broke down in tears. Disheartening.

Booth, 49, was arrested on Monday after being spotted driving a car that matched the description of one allegedly involved in a robbery and failing to stop after a police officer signaled him to. A police chase followed, resulting in two accidents before he crashed the car. He fled on foot but was eventually caught and charged with various offences.
Arthur Booth appeared in front of judge Mindy Glazer at Miami-Dade bond court charged with burglary. When he was taken into court, the judge looked at him for a moment or two and then asked: "Did you go to Nautilus?"
"Oh my goodness," replied Booth several times, at first with smiles and then breaking down in tears.
"I'm sorry to see you here," replied Judge Glazer. "I always wondered what happened to you."
"This was the nicest kid in middle school," she told the court. "He was the best kid in middle school. I used to play football with him, all the kids, and look what has happened."
"What's sad is how old we've become," she continued before finishing the conversation with: "Good luck to you, sir, I hope you are able to come out of this OK and just lead a lawful life."

The judge set Booth's bond at $43,000 (£27,500).

Very funny but this is a candid statement

KADUNA IS NOW PRODUCING FUEL FROM SUGARCANE- EL-RUFA'I

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufa’i, said the state Ministry of Science and Technology, in collaboration with Science Technology Forum (STF), has successfully produced bio-ethanol fuel grade from sugarcane.
Governor el-Rufa’i made this known while declaring open an international workshop on biofuel production technology, which took place at the
National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), Zaria.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Madina Shehu, el-Rufa’i said the government intends to upgrade that initiative into a full scale commercial outfit.
“In line with this initiative, the state government is on the process of constructing another plant at Unguwan Mu’azu to produce bio-diesel from Jatropha Curcas,” el-Rufa’i said.
The Director General of NARICT, Professor Idris Bugaje, in his remarks, advocated for inclusion of biofuel training at the undergraduate, National Certificate in Education (NCE), National and Higher National Diploma levels in order to address the country’s renewable energy challenges.
The don said it is imperative for the country to give emphasis to research on biofuel in view of the fact that renewable energy plays critical role in national growth and development of countries world over, adding that the sector can create job opportunities to the army of the country’s unemployed youths.
Bugaje urged the federal government to prioritise the completion of the Petroleum Training Institute, Kaduna, which was started by late President Umaru Yar’adua, but abandoned after his death.
He also called for the renaming of the institute to Petroleum and Biofuels
Technology Training Institute (PBTTI) in order to expand the mandate of the institute to include biofuel.
Former vice-chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ango Abdullahi, lamented how Nigeria’s technological breakthroughs and researches are dusting up on the shelves of different tertiary institutions of the country.
Ango said Nigeria needs to find alternative to firewood, otherwise desert encroachment would continue to be one of the predicaments of the country, adding that patriotic leadership can utilise the resources of Nigeria to address her different challenges.

AMAZING: Woman resigns rather than issue gay marriage licence in the US

Linda Barnette has issued marriage licenses in Grenada County, Mississippi for 24yrs. On Tuesday June 30th, she resigned rather than issue gay marriage licenses, writing in her letter of resignation;

"I choose to obey God rather than man. I am a follower of Christ and I believe strongly that the Bible is my final authority. The Bible teaches that a marriage is to be between a man and a woman. Therefore, because of the recent ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court, I can no longer fulfill my duties as Circuit Clerk and issue marriage licenses to same sex couples."
“I told my supervisors a while back if it happened, I would tender my resignation. I had already decided in my heart that I could not issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. It’s my Christian belief. As a follower of Christ, I could not do it. The Bible teaches it is contrary to His plan.” she told a Fox News reporter

World safest cities

In these five cities, residents can rest easy
walking home late at night and leaving their laptop unguarded. But they also know that safe doesn’t have to be boring.
Leaving your wallet or laptop unguarded in a cafe may not be recommended for most, but residents in the world’s safest cities could likely do it without a second thought. For many, feeling safe can be key to feeling at home. So to understand what it might be like to live in a super safe place, we sought out residents living in some of the most stable and secure cities in the world, as ranked by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The list considered factors such as personal safety, infrastructure stability, health stability and digital security technology. Locals weighed in on the best neighbourhoods to live in, what exactly makes them feel at ease – and why safe doesn’t have to equal boring.

Osaka

Along with Tokyo (named the world’s safest city), Osaka embodies the general peace of mind that can be felt throughout the country. “Japan in general is an incredibly safe country to live in,” said Daniel Lee, founder of the local English language Kansai Scene magazine, who moved from the United Kingdom 17 years ago. “So much so that locals are accustomed to leaving their personal belongings unattended on tables in coffee shops while they go and order. It’s unthinkable anywhere else.” Osaka is known for being business-focussed,
which means that people work and commute late into the night. “Even at the latest hours, businessmen are on the train, and the main terminals are populated as much at night as by day,” said Yoshie Yamamoto, who moved
from Kyoto 25 years ago and runs the oldest Noh theatre in the city. “There is absolutely no problem for a lady to be travelling alone late at night on the subways.”
The work-oriented culture can also lead to friendly conversation. “Osaka is a city of salesmen, and the locals love to talk,” Lee said. “You can enter any small watering hole and be treated like a long lost friend. You may not understand a word of what they say to you, but the good vibes will win you over.” For a chance to mingle with the locals Yamamoto recommends living in a downtown area such as Ikuno Ward or Abeno Ward, where Nagaya (traditional long houses) are still common. “These places are relatively cheap as they have been inhabited by the same locals [for years],” she said. “If you are able to make friends with your neighbours, you will experience the true Osaka character filled with affection, warmth and friendship.”
Those looking for a more nature-focused
lifestyle can head to the “bed towns”
surrounding the city, such as Minoh and
Kita-Senri, which have easy train access to downtown Osaka, as well as the nearby cities of Kobe and Kyoto.

Amsterdam

With fewer than one million residents,
Amsterdam is still relatively small compared to other cities on the EIU’s list, giving it a leg up when it comes to providing a safe residential environment. The capital city also has a laid back vibe that puts people at ease.
“I feel incredibly safe,” said Toni
Hinterstoisser, general manager at the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, who moved from New York City three years ago. “The people’s free spirit makes them more relaxed about everyday things. Nobody gets agitated easily.” This is true even of the police, who Hinterstoisser says are very present and polite, but also straight to the point. While all of Amsterdam’s neighbourhoods are considered safe, districts in the south
such as De Pijp and Oud-Zuid are more
upscale. To the east and north neighbourhoods like Noord are considered to be up-and-coming. Hinterstoisser lives in Oud West (Old West), which he likes for being only 2km west of the city centre and near Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. One word of caution: no matter where you
choose to live, don’t expect a level house.
“As Amsterdam is mostly built on water, the houses are not completely straight,” warned Hinterstoisser. “If you put a tennis ball on one end of my living room, it will roll all by itself quite swiftly to the other side.”

Sydney

Despite being Australia’s largest city, Sydney’s neighbourhood-oriented culture keeps residents feeling safe. “Our community looks after each other,” said Richard Graham, a Sydney native and owner of local tour company My Detour . “If someone looks suspicious, we tell our neighbours, and word soon gets around who to watch out for.” The city recently adopted a plan to spend $15 million a year improving footpaths and pedestrian crossings to encourage walking, and Victoria Moxey, originally from Buenos
Aires and founder of local visitor guide Urban Walkabout, believes this is helping to keep life safe.
“The streets are always filled with urban
types sitting at coffee shops with friends,
walking dogs or just exploring the city,” she said. “Sydney is a city where the more you walk the streets, the more you feel part of a community.”
To make the most of this walking culture,
expats often choose to live in Potts Point,
3km east of the city centre, where Art Deco apartment buildings and plentiful cafes give the neighbourhood a New York City vibe.
Another favoured option is Surry Hills, 3km southeast of the centre, which has the best coffee spots and restaurants in town, drawing hipsters, design lovers and foodies. For a true Australian beach lifestyle, residential-oriented Waverley or surfer-friendly Bronte are about 8km southeast of the city, while Rose Bay is an upscale harbour side option just 7km to the east.

Singapore

This Southeast Asian city-state takes law
enforcement seriously, resulting in a very
secure environment. Rinita Vanjre Ravi,
originally from Bangalore, and co founder of dine-with-locals site BonAppetour , sees how much difference a well-funded police department can make. “In Singapore, the police force is well paid, which enables them to be concerned about the welfare of their people,” she said. It also ensure laws are enforced. Vanjre Ravi finds that Singapore locals are really honest. “You can leave your bag at the table at any restaurant and go to the cashier to order food with the peace of mind that your bag will still be there,” she said. “Residents know that there is a high chance of being caught
and punished.” A stable political environment and a no-tolerance policy for religious or racist jokes also contributes to a harmonic city vibe. Still, living in such a populous area comes
with its own set of challenges. Managing the daily commute is key when finding a place to live in Singapore, and locals advise living as close to work as possible. Vanjre Ravi recommends Tiong Bahru as a central hipster neighbourhood with specialty shops and trendy restaurants, though those in a higher income bracket can look at the Duxton Hill apartments near Outram Park, 2km west of downtown, notable for its restored colonial buildings and international cuisine.

Stockholm

Being located so far north comes with its
advantages, like never-ending summer days. Stockholm’s natural light in summer, paired with a well-lit city centre in darker times of the year, contributes to a feeling of safe public spaces. “Having two small boys, safety is increasingly important to me, and Stockholm is simply brilliant for children,” said Kat T, originally from London, who writes the blog An English Mamma in Stockholm. “There are playgrounds in parks away from the traffic and many leafy, green
areas right in the centre of town.” Though it doesn’t have the non-stop buzz of
London, Kat finds that Stockholm’s slower pace can sometimes be a blessing. Despite its small size, the city also feels “dynamic and sophisticated”, she said. “Swedes are early adopters of things new, especially technology, and are frequently trend setters.”
Most people live in apartments close to the Central Business District, but those looking for better value should head 2km west to Kungsholmen, while a funkier vibe
(evidenced in vintage shops and avant-garde galleries) can be found in Södermalm 3km to the south. The waterfront areas have also been recently redeveloped, with Hammarby Sjöstad being among the most popular for its walkable boulevards and eco-conscious
design.

These are the cities to visit.

HIDDINK QUITS HOLLAND JOB

Guus Hiddink has left his position as
Netherlands head coach after just 10 months in charge. The 68-year-old began his second spell in charge in August and had a contract until the end of Euro 2016
Hiddink lost five and won four of his 10
matches in charge and leaves his position with the Dutch third in their Euro 2016 qualifying group. They are five points behind leaders Iceland and three adrift of the Czech Republic in Group A.
"I am sorry that it went this way," said
Hiddink. "I thought it was an honour to again coach the Dutch national team and I wish my successor, the staff and the players every success on the way to the European Championships in France."
The rest of the coaching staff - including
assistant Danny Blind - will remain in place. Hiddink's Netherlands defeated Spain 2-0 in a friendly in March, but suffered defeats to Iceland and the Czech Republic to damage their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016.
The top two finishers in each of the nine
qualifying groups, plus the highest-placed team finishing third will automatically qualify for the finals in France next year. They will be joined by the winners of four play-off ties
contested by the remaining eight third-placed teams. Dutch Football Association (KNVB) director Bert van Oostveen said: "I regret this development. Unfortunately, the results of Guus's work were not immediately visible for everyone."
The former Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea coach has also managed Australia, Russia, Turkey and South Korea in a 28-year career.

Universal Studio Hollywood debuts new "Fast and Furious" ride

Universal Studios in Hollywood has debuted its new "Fast and Furious" ride for fans all over the country. The ride is officially called "Fast and Furious Supercharged ," and fans will get the first opportunity to experience it on Thursday along with the cast and crew of "Furious 7," according to Reuters. This revolutionary new ride immerses the
fan into the steam-charged excitement of
the film as a character, as opposed to being a spectator. The ride features the use of cutting edge technology with 3D-HD imagery accompanied by the ride itself, which boasts speeds of up to 120 MPH. The 3D-HD imagery is actually a 360-degree screen that makes the rider feel a part of the action. The attraction itself also features the original stars from the film who immerse the rider in the film's fictional universe and take them on a super-charged high-speed chase that includes the perceived notion of danger, stunts that are inherent to the film franchise.
The red carpet ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday was attended by stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and franchise newcomer Jason Statham. The event also featured Diesel cutting the ribbon for the attraction, followed by a stunt car coming out and violently crashing through a billboard to mark the attraction's official
opening. The actors got an exclusive opportunity to take on the attraction themselves with a firsthand experience.
"When you put people in a theater or (they
watch) a blu-ray DVD, they are watching in the comfort of their home," Gibson told
Reuters. "But to physically be inside a tram car and experience your favorite franchise as a theme park ride, it definitely raises the
bar." Variety also reports that the attraction's debut ceremonies also featured "souped-up" cars that sped onto the lot with engines roaring and revving to the crowd. "We were looking to have a grand finale to the studio tour, and we thought, 'What better film series than 'Fast & Furious?'" Chick Russell, executive producer of the ride, told Variety. "It almost feels like a thrill ride
in the theater."

Security tips on use of alternative banking channels

With the rise in the use of alternative banking channels like ATMs, mobile apps, internet & mobile banking, fraudsters have also become smarter in using these channels to dupe innocent people. There are security intelligence when using alternative banking channels. Here are some tips to ensure that you do not become a victim of desperate fraudsters;·Familiarize yourself with the look and feel of the ATM key pad where you punch in your details. Be alert for scratches, marks, adhesive, unusual join marks anywhere on the ATM. Also watch out for any tape residue or sticky material on ATMs. If you notice any of these signs on an ATM, do not use.·Avoid using an ATM machine that has its security cameras installed so close that it records your PIN. If the camera is looking at how you input your PIN in the ATM, do not use.·Never use an ATM machine when other people are loitering, hanging over your shoulders, or straining their neck to see what you are doing. Do not accept help from strangers or even bank security to retrieve an ATM card stuck in an ATM machine. If your card is stuck, report to the bank.·Do not use ATM machines with extra signage or warnings posted on the machine, especially when it does not have the bank’s logo or the logo of a host you can identify.·Never keep a written copy of your PIN or internet banking password in your wallet or purse as it could be stolen. The safest store house for your PIN or Internet Banking passwords is your head.·Lastly, if a point of sale terminal shows signs of possible tampering, for example having a ‘Press Hard' sticky note, do not use. Also do not use a POS terminal if the security seal is punctured, creased, folded, or cut, or if wires are visible through the ventilation slot.ATM thieves, unlike armed robbers, do not carry guns. But what they can do to a person’s bank account if they hit it, can be just as bad the effect of armed robbers. You have a duty to stay alert and avoid small mistakes that expose you to theirdirty tricks. Once you are able to do this, your banking experience should be safe and secure. This has been courtesy First City Monument Bankas part of The Bankers Committee Financial Literacy Public Enlightenment Programme brought to you by The Bankers Committee, comprising all the commercial banks in Nigeria and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

DONE DEAL: LIVERPOOL SIGNS BRAZILIAN FIRMINO

Liverpool have signed forward Roberto Firmino from Hoffenheim on a five-year deal for a fee of about £29m. The 23-year-old's deal is subject to a medical, which will take place after he returns from Chile, where he has been playing for Brazil in the Copa America. Firmino, who has scored 47 goals in 151
games for Hoffenheim, becomes the Reds' second most expensive player. The Anfield club made Andy Carroll their record signing when he joined them for £35m from Newcastle in 2011. They also paid Southampton £25m for Adam Lallana in 2014, and have already brought in Burnley striker Danny Ings, goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder
James Milner this summer. The Reds have so far resisted two offers from Manchester City for England forward Raheem Sterling. Firmino, who has spent the last four-and-a- half seasons in the Bundesliga, was on target for Brazil in their 2-1 Copa America victory over Venezuela on Sunday. In the absence of Neymar, who has been suspended for the rest of the tournament, Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, who is already a Liverpool player, are set to start again in Saturday's quarter-final against Paraguay.

ARSENAL FAITHFULS CHECK THIS OUT

Petr Cech's move across London is imminent after a fee was agreed between Chelsea and Arsenal. Arsenal have agreed a £10.9m fee for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech according to Sky sources. The fee was one of the key elements outstanding as Arsenal edge closer to finalising the transfer of the Czech Republic international. It is understood that Cech has already agreed personal terms in principle with Arsenal, but no final deal has been announced by either club. If the deal goes through, as is now widely expected, Cech could be eligible for Arsenal's first game of the season - the Community Shield on August 2 when their opponents will be Premier League champions Chelsea, where Cech has won a string of major honours in an 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge. The transfer will be a cash only deal, with Chelsea's request to receive a home-grown player as part of the proposed transfer no longer being considered. Cech is said to be grateful to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for allowing him to move to whatever club he chooses, even though that is now set to be London and title rivals Arsenal. The 33-year-old has one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge but has been searching for a new employer after spending much of last season as second choice 'keeper behind Thibaut Courtois.
Chelsea captain John Terry said on Monday that he believes Arsenal will be buying an extra 12-15 points a season if they complete a deal for Cech.

PDP REPLIES BUHARI ON THE EMPTY TRESURY STATEMENT MADE YESTERDAY

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as evasive, diversionary and preemptive, the present government’s pile up of excuses for possible failure in delivering on its campaign promises to Nigerians. The PDP said it is unfortunate that President Mohammadu Buhari and the APC, who were privy to the nation’s dwindling economy occasioned by global economic downturn and fall in international oil price, even before the start of the campaigns, chose to deceive Nigerians with bogus promises, only to now resort to excuses after using the promises to secure power at the center. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Tuesday said the party notes with dismay, President Buhari’s statement on Monday that Nigerians should not expect much from his first 100 days in office on claims that he met “virtually an empty treasury and huge debts”, noting that such only underlines the fact that the present administration is really not equipped to face the challenges of governance.“While we restate our resolve to engage only in credible and issue based opposition, we want the President and the APC to note that their plea for patience from Nigerians does not arise, because ab-initio, there has not been any indication that they are actually serious and determined to deliver on their campaign promises upon which they rode to power.“Of course Nigerians are willing to support and cooperate with the President, but we are worried that the pictures emerging from his presidency and his party do not in any way inspire hope in the citizenry, especially as they have continued to show that theirs is ostensibly a matter of obtaining power by false pretenses.“President Buhari and the APC must know that Nigerians did not give them the mandate to engage in frivolous excuses and pleas but to hit the ground running with solutions and quick fixes they promised during the campaigns. We ask, is President Buhari’s statement an admission of poor knowledge of national and international economic affairs or does it underscore the lack of capacity and skills by the administration to effectively harness and galvanize resources and potential inherent in Nigeria which has already been nurtured as Africa’s largest economy and one of the fasted growing in the world.“Even if Nigerians decide to wait endlessly, we wonder how much the President can achieve amidst the flip-flops from his presidency and cacophony of interests from his party leaders struggling to enlarge their selfish political and economic frontiers.“How can one reconcile President Buhari’s statement with the recent ridiculous and misleading claim by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed that this administration has achieved in three weeks what the immediate past administration did not achieve in five years?“Since after their electoral victory, the APC and the President have continued to expose their lack of commitment towards their campaign promises.“We recall that on May 5, 2015, twenty-four days before his inauguration, President Buhari at a meeting with APC leaders in Abuja opened the excuse galore when he expressed his nervousness to deliver in office, adducing that ‘Rome was not built in a day’.“We also recall that in their attempt to find an escape route in one of their bogus campaign promises, the APC denied that the President ever promised Nigerians that they will end insurgency two months after inauguration but had to swallow their words after the PDP confronted them with the April 22, 2015 CNN interview where Buhari made that promise.“Indeed, we empathize with the President knowing that the confusion and clear lack of direction in his party have not helped matters, but we urge him to rise up to the challenge, take urgent steps and disentangle himself from the selfish and unpatriotic tendencies of APC leaders, especially given the fact that Nigerians gave him a mandate for which they will continue to hold him accountable.“Finally, the PDP restates that it is eager to see the APC and the President unveil their economic road map and blueprint for governance so as to enable us through robust opposition, provide credible alternatives and options for their policies and programmes in the overall interest of our dear nation”.
